OUR FOCUS
BREAST CANCER PROJECT
Breast cancer is the most prevalent form of cancer worldwide amongst women. Approximately 99% of breast cancers occur in women according to World Heatlh Organization data.
Early detection plays a pivotal role in improving outcomes. For instance, data from American Cancer Society shows that early detection has a profound impact on survival rates: when identified at the initial stage, the five-year survival rate stands at 99%, while this rate descends to 22% when detected at the advanced fourth stage.
These statistics underscore the critical importance of early detection through regular screenings and self-examinations, offering women the best chance for successful treatment and recovery.
THE REALITY
In Africa, the situation is more delicate and complex. breast cancer is the most common cancer among African women and is the second most common cause of cancer deaths in Africa as estimated by GLOBOCAN (2018).
Inequalities in breast cancer worldwide are due to a combination of social, economic, geographical, lifestyle, and genetic factors.
In Cabo Verde, the lack of a formal cancer registry, late diagnosis, insufficient diagnostic and treatment services, and financial constraints exacerbate the problem. Additionally, treating breast cancer at a later stage often involves sending patients to Portugal, accompanied by lengthy bureaucratic processes, which may compromise patient survival chances.
Improving early detection rates in Cabo Verde is vital for saving the lives of thousands of women.
